Where does your water come from?
Good to know: Makes sense. Hunter Water treats mains supply with chemicals, that's the chemical smell you notice in the shower. It's a common trigger for skin dryness and irritation. Most standard filters don't actually remove it.

Why Water Filtration Actually Matters (even in Newcastle & the Hunter!)

Most Hunter homes never think about their water past whether it tastes okay out of the tap. Fair enough.  But “tastes fine” and “is fine” aren't the same thing.

If you're on mains water, Hunter Water does a solid job keeping it safe to drink. But the disinfectants they use stick around in the pipes and show up as that chemical smell in a hot shower and slightly “off” taste in the tap water. It’s linked to low hydration, dry skin and irritation for a lot of people.

If you're on tank or bore water, there's no council treatment plant doing that job for you. What lands on your roof or sits in the ground is what comes out of your tap, unless you're filtering it.

Your Water Source Changes the Answer

Town / Mains Water

Treated with chemicals, which handle bacteria but leave a distinct disinfectant smell and taste that regular filters don't touch. Linked to shower steam irritation, dry skin and flare-ups for sensitive skin or eczema.

Tank Water

Collects leaf litter, dust and droppings straight off your roof. Can carry bacteria and organic material NSW Health specifically flags in unfiltered rainwater. Looks and tastes fine. That's exactly the problem.

Bore Water

Quality swings from block to block depending on what's in the ground underneath you. Sediment and organic matter are the most common issues, and you genuinely can't tell just by looking at it.

Why Get It Installed Properly (Not a DIY Job)

In NSW, any water filter permanently connected to your home's pressurised water supply is legally classed as plumbing work. It has to be installed by a licensed plumber, and the gear has to carry WaterMark certification.

Skip that, and you're not just breaking the rules. An unlicensed install can void your home insurance and cancel the manufacturer's warranty if a fitting fails and you end up with water damage.

A&A's own licensed team handles every install, and you get a proper compliance certificate at the end. Clean, straight swap. Zero fuss.

Before you choose a system

Whole house water filter: a short guide for Newcastle homes

A whole house water filter treats water as it enters your home, rather than at just one tap. The right setup depends on your water source, what you want to address and how much water your household uses. Start with your water, not a product catalogue.

Water filter installation: what to check first

  • Match the treatment to town, tank or bore water. A filter is not a substitute for testing an untreated supply.
  • Ask about flow rate, water pressure and access for future cartridge changes.
  • Use a licensed plumber and ask about replacement filters, ongoing maintenance and what the system does not treat.

Thinking about filtered water before summer?

Australia's home water treatment market is growing. Industry research identifies whole-house filtration and softening as its fastest-growing segment by value. [1]

With summer approaching, now is a good time to understand your options and plan water filter installation around your household. You do not need to choose a system today. Read the guide, then let A&A's licensed Newcastle team help you decide whether filtration suits your home.
